Melting Snow
In much of Japan, plum blossoms are the first heralds of the warmth of spring, even as snow sometimes continues to fall. Here, a beautiful young girl carries a branch with plum blossoms, clutching it close to her to stay warm. She is wearing a simple kimono with plum blossoms floating on a flowing river. As usual in Japanese art, we are asked to “see one but imagine ten”: the girl is the picture of youth and purity, herself a blossom on the current of life, facing a new world.
